Unicode Fonts in Word 2004 on OSX

I am trying to use a Unicode font to write special medieval characters in
Word 2004 running on OSX. I downloaded the TrueType for Macintosh OSX font
listed on this web page
http://www.engl.virginia.edu/OE/junicode/junicode.html and it installed just
fine, but when I try to insert it into Word using the Insert-->Symbol menu,
the font doesn't appear in the list at all. I am able to do this on my PC
using Word 2003 with no problem. What's the trick to doing this on a Mac?
I keep reading that Mac OSX and Word 2004 fully support Unicode, but I'm not
sure...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike.
Have you already had a look at OS X's character palette? Your font
should normally be available in there. I downloaded the font and, like
you, I wasn't able to insert symbols using the traditional
Insert>Symbol command, but as far as I can see, Junicode is available
in the system character palette. To access the palette, open System
Preferences, International, and in the Input tab, select "character
palette". In this palette, select "Unicode" from the dropdown menu next
to "View", and you should find a list with entries such as "Phonetic
Extensions" and "IPA Extensions", which should contain Junicode
symbols. You can just drag and drop them into your Word document, it
should work just fine. Hope this was useful.

Welcome to Unicode. Think characters, not fonts. Use the Character
Palette, or a keyboard layout or other input method, to insert
characters. For example, to insert a Junicode "arlaug" rune (don't you
just love the names of runes?), open the Character Palette, switch to
Unicode and Unicode Blocks if necessary, scroll down to Runic on the
left (it's after Ogham), and double-click the arlaug. Alternatively,
switch to the Unicode Hex Input input method and type option-16ee.

Very full details on these methods of inserting Unicode characters are
to be found in my Take Control ebook on Word 2004 (second volume). m.
