unifying Styles of multiple documents

I'm assembling a book from multiple documents with widely diverging
Styles.
The margins, fonts, etc. all all completely different. How do I unify
these into one format for the book? Must I work on each document/
chapter separately, or is there a way to impose order on the assembled
whole?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi Mark:

There are two approaches, and you must decide which suits you best:

1) Put all of your text in the one file. As you paste the text in, styles
of the same name will adopt the formatting of the destination document.

2) Proof and Print as separate files, using RD fields to create a combined
TOC and Index.

The first method is usually best for books of less than 5,000 pages. Word
will slow down a bit north of about 2,000 pages in a single file, but it
will keep going; if you have a proper workstation set up for heavy
publishing.

The second method involves a lot more work, but may be easier if you have to
make major changes to the text, particularly if your contributors are still
working on their pieces.

You can unify the styles in the separate documents by creating a template
containing the "correct styles". Attach that template to each document in
turn, and check the "Automatically update styles on open" box.

Save, Close, and Re-open each document, then turn "Automatically update
styles" OFF and leave it off. Each document will now have a style set
exactly the same as the template.

All you have to do then is apply the correct styles to each piece of text
:)

Please ask if you need more help!

Cheers

John,

Thanks very much for all this advice.

May I please ask:

1) How do I "attach a template to each document"?
2) What is an "RD field"?

I'm going through a Word tutorial as we speak, just haven;t
reached those topics yet.

Your advice is extremely helpful, thanks again.
