uninstall 2007 fails

Office Pro 2007 will not uninstall. Using the Add or Remove Programs in XP,
uninstall fails. Using original disc to attempt repair/install, setup fails.
Office Diagnostics finds nothing (except to suggest I set preferences to
allow periodic updates. I have never changed this setting and assume it is
the default.) All the programs in the suite run ok except Excel, which
crashes; so I cannot confirm that Excel preferences are the same as other
programs in allowing updates. Running XP Home, SP2. Do I have to do a clean
install of the OS or is there something else to try first?
