Uninstall - error 1402 MVP please help

On a Windows 2000 Professional machine, when I try to
uninstall Office XP Standard I get the following error:

Error 1402 Setup cannot open registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current\Versi
on\Setup\KnownGood

Also I was never able to install Office XP Service Pack 2.
I received a message that the installation was
unsuccessful, but there was no explanation as to why it
didn't work.
