Uninstall Office 2003 Trial? Add/Remove returns Error Message!

K

When I try to uninstall Trial Office 2003 (Downloaded Version) Add/Remove
returns the following "The installation source for the product is not
available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it."

I have the original Office.exe file on my desktop, but how do I tell A/R
where it is, or is there another solution?

Please help, I'm in a real bind here - Kevin

It sounds like the Local Installation Source (LIS) for Office 2003 was
moved or deleted. The LIS is used instead of the installation CD if
you want to add/remove features or remove Office. Do you recall
deleting or moving a folder called "Msocache"? In any event, you'll
need to obtain the Local Installation Source Tool which will help you
correct the issue:

Thank you Beth, but when I attempt to run the LISTool, I get the following
error code: 0x8007006e ?

If it makes any difference, my original (downloaded) Office.exe file is
located in a folder on the desktop.

Is that all you get? A code and no error message? Take a look in your
Event Viewer in the Control Panel or go to Start/Run and run: Eventvwr

In the Applications section, see if you can find any additional
details about the error. With only a number it's a little difficult to
determine what is happening.

Oh Boy!

For the 31st alone, Event Viewer shows well over 100 (yes, that's right,
#100) "Warnings, Information, and Error" entries.

The most common "Warning and Information" source is listed as
"MsiInstaller," while the "Error" source is identified as "MSMPSVC."

The event "Categories" are all "None," and the "Events" are identified as
1004, with a couple of 11708's thrown in for good measure.

There is no specific reference to the error code "0x8007006e" and the only
other text in the original error window, other than that reporting that an
error had occured, was a sentence telling me to contact Microsoft Support,
with a link that took me to the Office home page, where I found this
discussion group.

At this point I don't know how to provide more information re the error
itself.

I have found that by setting my system clock back to a date prior to the
31st, when my 60 day trial expired, that I can avoid the Office 2003 pop-up
warning about activation, but that's not a solution. I don't want to pirate
the software, I just don't want to buy it at this time.

I have also attempted reinstalling my Office 2000 from the original CDROM
disks over the downloaded Office 2003, but get no further than the musical
tones that begin all installations. The system doesn't freeze or anything at
this point, it simply doesn't proceed with the installation. There is no
error message associated with this at all.

Hmmm.... well phooey - I was hoping that would provide some clues. :-(

- Did you download and install the Office trial or did it come
installed on your computer?
- Use Windows Search and search for a "Msocache" folder.

If you can't find a Msocache folder then the Windows Installer CleanUp
Utility may be what you need to use instead of the LIS utility. Try
this one instead and use it to remove only the reference to Office.
Once that is complete then you'll need to reinstall Office to point
the Windows Installer to your installation CD:

Let us know what you find! :)

Ok, here we go, but still no happy ending?

No "Msocache" folder found.

I downloaded and ran Win Install Cleanup, which did remove reference to
Office 3000 from the Add/Remove listing.

Restarted computer.

Add/Remove showed only Office 2000 listing, but still with no remove or
change buttons.

Attempt to open Word still brings up Office 3000 with activation message.

Ran "Cleanup" a 2nd time removing Office 2000 listing from A/R. This seemed
successful, with no listing remaining. However, Word still available via
shortcut on desktop, and still opening as Office 2003 product.

Regardless, attempted to reinstall Office 2000 from original cdrom.

Installation seemed to be working until... "Error 1919. Error configuring
ODBC data source: MS Access Database, ODBC error 6: Component not found in
registry. Verify that the file MS Access Database exists and that you can
access it."

Clicked ignore and Office setup seemed to complete successfully.

D#mn, still opening Word 2003, although other Office programs (i.e. Outlook,
PowerPoint, etc.) open with Office 2000 version.

Can I use "Regedit" to remove all references to Word 2003, and if so, how?

Also, for what its worth, while I don't recall where I got this information,
I seem to remember that Access Database errors are a ".Net" problem, or am I
way off base here?

After you used the Windows Installer Clean-up utility then you needed
to reinstall Office 2003 to recreate the Installer data. All the
utility does is remove the information in the Registry that the
Windows Installer looks for when attempting to uninstall or update the
installation. All of the Office installation files will still be
available and nothing was removed.

As I noted, once you use the utility to remove the reference to Office
2003 then you need to reinstall Office. Once Office is reinstalled
then you should be able to use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall
Office.

You'll also need to reinstall Office 2000 so the correct Windows
Installer entries are recreated as well.

Success!

Sorry, but I had missed the part about reinstalling 2003 again - the
reinstallation allowed me to use A/R to clear this program.

Reinstalling 2000 went as expected.

Thank you - Kevin
