Uninstalled Office XP - Trying to install Office 2000

I have an XP machine that had Office XP installed. None
of the Office apps would let me create new documents or
edit options, etc (i.e. File, New was disabled). I
uninstalled Office XP and am now trying to install Office
2000 SR-1. When Office 2000 setup starts, it just hangs
at the "Preparing to install Office 2000 SR-1
Professional" screen. Any ideas?
