i bought an imac from someone who had installed microsoft office on it. he
thought he had removed it. i bought my own copy, and when i installed it, i
wasn't asked for my key number or a serial number. the app opened right
up.

worse yet for the seller, he can't use his own copy of office if i have it open
on my machine! we have both purchased office, but we can't use them. (he
is in canada and i'm in oregon.) he gets the message that "word is already
in use" and he can't open it.

how can i uninstall all his user data and registration so i can install my own
copy on this machine? help!

thanks in advance!

Isn't there some kind of a uninstall function in the installer-app?
You should probably use this.
Or, if you wanna be really sure that all is out, format your hd...

There is a Remove Office tool included. For Office 2001, it is available
for download here:
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#Office2001>

For Office X, insert the Office X CD, then open the Value Pack. Launch the
Value Pack Installer. Check "Remove Office", then click "Continue." Run
the "Remove Office" utility.

For Office 2004:
1. Launch the Remove Office tool, located in HD/Applications/Microsoft
Office 2004/Additional Tools/Remove Office.
2. Press the "Continue" button to locate currently installed copies of
Office.
3. Select the version(s) of Office that you want to remove, and press the
"Continue" button.
4. Choose what components you wish to remove. For a complete removal,
choose to "Remove the Office 2004 folder," "Remove the selected Office 2004
system files," and "Preferences."

After uninstalling, the user can re-install from the CD. The user will need
to re-apply the latest Office updates, available from
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx>. Note that the simpler method
posted at the McGimpsey & Associates site should be adequate in this
instance. Otherwise, uninstalling is a reliable method. Formatting the
hard drive might be a bit extreme for this sort of issue, though I'm sure it
would work.
