uninstalling office xp

My husband brought home a copy of office xp so he could access all his work
info. at home. He was told this was ok. Well I installed it and for a few
days every thing worked fine. Then my windows auto updater installed a patch
for it. Now when you try to open it a windows installer pops up and runs for
a minute then another pop up saying " Patch pkg.cannot open, verify pkg.
exist & can open or contact application vendor to verify windows installer
patch pkg. I cant even uninstall it, ms wants 35.00 to answer ? because there
is no registration for it on my computer. I'm a rookie at this. Can anybody
HELP me?

One assumes that Office is licensed for use on the home PC?
