If you go to the MS Knowledge base and enter the search
phrase "This patch package could not be opened" it will
return several articles. Article 295823 is the one that is
most specific to this problem. It describes how to
download and use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
Unfortunately the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility cannot
be used if you are using Windows XP. If you are on a
windows XP system, then you can refer to article 812490
which describes the same problem under Windows XP, but
with Plus! rather than Office. The method in article
812490 will work for Office also, (I have just used it to
fix both Office 2000 and an Office XP problems). This
method involves editing the registery so just like MS I
have to warn you, make sure you know what you are doing
before editing the registery.
