unintended e and a with accents in word 2003

when typing keys Hyphen, question mark, and quotation, an e or an a with an
accent accent appears instead. I have checked my setting and they appear to
be OK. Can you suggest how to correct this problem?

The symptom suggests that the setting for the keyboard was inadvertently
changed from U.S. English to something else. Check in Control Panel
Regional and Language Options Keyboards and Languages Change
Keyboards.
