Unique Identifier for Projects

There are some threads on this subject but I have not seen an answer that has
helped me yet. I want to give projects a short unique alphanumeric code to
make projects easier to track and I wanted to see whether it was possible to
have this automatically generated from the contents of some of the Enterprise
Custom Fields. Is this possible and if so can anyone explain in detail how I
would do it?

From my point of view naming convetion for projects is not a job for
randomize() function. Short name of your project have to be understndable
for everyone who need to find/work with the amount of projects.
In the past, a telecom co. used a naming convention that identified both
the program, project and the hardware platform. In addition, letters
depicted whether the hardware was test, development or production. For
example, a Long Distance program would be LD and supported a dept in Texas
(TX) and it might be used for accounts payable? (whatever) the ending name
convention might be LDTXAPD01. Noting the above mentioned plus the project
number. This worked as an enterprise solution
