Unix, FP Photo Galleries & Subweb incompatability?

W

WebwranglerTX

Does anyone know of any known incompatabilities between a Unix server file structure and FP 2003 photo galleries?
The problem I am having is that my host's Apache server uses the public_html file structure for subwebs, which does not allow subfolders under subwebs.
I am a web designer hosting my non-profit customer's web pages free of charge on my own account using subwebs. My customers point their domain names at my subweb URL. The problem is that photos are not showing up and instead the red x is seen. In case you are wondering, I have Unix because I need each photo album to have its own permissions and a login for each visitor but we haven't even gotten that far yet.
FP wants to produce "photogallery" folders under the root domain containing thumbnails, a javascript file and the various html files. This makes it impossible for me to track how much space is being used by each sub. When I move the photogallery123 folder files out of the FP-created folder and into their sub's folder as loose files (./public_html/subdomain/,) renaming each file according to the sub name, the gallery does not display properly on the web. Red x's show up instead. The albums display perfectly fine locally within FP using the preview tab.
I tried moving the whole photogallery123 folder as a solution but this does not work because subwebs are not allowed to have subfolders. All files must be loose under the single root sub folder. By the way, I have not designated these subfolders as "webs" using the right click method to convert them. They are simply folders under the root domain's public_html system.
All of the moving that I am doing is via click and drag so that FP can update the references.
The major headache with this is that I have to rename every file by hand, one by one and then similarly move them and confirm each confirmation dialog box one by one to keep the references updated. With over 10,000 photos and over 100 albums to manage, I simply don't have time for this. I also don't have time for copying and pasting urls into aftermarket javascript code. There has to be a better way.
Is the problem with this that I am trying to do this on a Unix Server? Will switching to a Windows Server make this any easier? I don't see how but I thought I would ask. I would like each photo album to have restricted access via logins for each visitor but that is just a dream at the moment. I would be happy if I could have even just one login for each album that each non-profit group can share among their own members.
I found a knowledge base document #825451 titled subsites that references IIS Manager and Sharepoint Services but I am not familiar with these services. I need to have this done by tonight and I feel like I am spinning my wheels.
Thanks for any help in advance! :)

I'm a little confused here.
public_html is the default publish to or root folder on a UNIX server, but it is never included in a
domain or subweb name.

Example:
If your site is www.pictures.com it means your domain is pictures.com
A standard folder named gallery1 would be accessed using www.pictures.com/gallery1 and gallery1 can
be a password protected folder. ( and should have an index.htm page that opens as the default page )

Also you should be able to create your photo gallery entirely inside gallery1

A subweb named gallery1 would be www.gallery1.pictures.com and can also be password protected.

Sorry to have confused you! The location I gave you is a
path. It is the path that shows up in the control panel
when I view the files in file manager and it is the path
that tells you how I set up the folders in the same manner
inside my FP program. The problem I am having is that FP
creates a photogallery123 folder in the root instead of

the root domain.

Forget the control panel, it is totally different from FrontPage and has a totally different
purpose.

Create your photogallaries on you local machine and then publish.

Are you saying that when you create a photogallery, inside a folder in your local web, that
FrontPage creates files in the root??

If it is a FP subweb open the subweb under the root web in FP and create the gallery in FP
- do not move it from one web.subweb to another in any other tool

Yes, that is how I have been creating FP photo galleries. FP creates the thumbnails/html pages in the parent domain folder, not the sub web where the source jpegs are located. The system generated folder is always called "photogallery" and contains a suffix which is a randomly generated four digit numeral. An example is Photogallery1234. The photogallery123 folder is a system folder that is created automatically and saved under the root domain instead of the sub site folder where I need it to be along side the html page. This is why I have to move the code and images to place them under the subsite together with their corresponding html file. Possibly there is a setting somewhere that I need to change to tell the photo gallery tool where I want the album generated.
Just to clairify, these are sub sites, not sub webs. Sub webs have a set of their own extension folders just like the root domain has. I have created photo galleries in both subwebs and sub sites, just to see if they are handled any differently. They don't seem to be.

To clarify how I put a photo slideshow together, I use Windows Explorer to copy the 50+ precompressed jpegs from the My Pictures folder to the subweb folder. Then I open FP displaying the parent web and it's subsites. I create a new page under the subsite for the photo gallery. I use the "insert > web component" menu to create the album, navigating directly to the jpegs, which are now located under the subsite folder. This is my way of creating a copy of the jpegs so that the originals don't accidently get altered. FP 2002 has an image compression tool that appears when saving a page with "file > save > picture options." If one is not careful to click the "picture options" button, FP will automatically apply additonal compression, further degrading the image.

After using Windows Explorer to copy anything to a FP web, always run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks for FP to recognize the new
files

In FP there are only webs (root web) and subsites (subwebs). Just because you have a folder (not a FP subweb) in a FP web and may
have is set up as a subdomain on you server, to FP the folder is part of the web or subweb it is in, and the gallery will be created
the root (top level) of that web/subweb.

So if you have a folder in your web (say: myvacation) with a page (and all your images) under it, and you make a photogallery in
that page FP will create the photogallery folder at the root level.

If you want FP to handle the photogallery associated w/ that "folder" only:
Right Click that folder and select Convert to Web
Double click the new subweb folder, to open a second instance of FP and that new subweb
Create your photogallery (FP will create it in the top of the subweb, not your root web)

If you want to later, you can convert your subweb back to a normal folder (at the root level web)

| Yes, that is how I have been creating FP photo galleries. FP creates the thumbnails/html pages in the parent domain folder, not
the sub web where the source jpegs are located. The system generated folder is always called "photogallery" and contains a suffix

has. I have created photo galleries in both subwebs and sub sites, just to see if they are handled any differently. They don't seem

That is exactly what I wanted to know... THANKS! I needed to confirm what that one thing was that cause FP to place the files and folders all in the subsite, which ofcourse will be subwebs after using right click > convert!!!
My host does not allow sub folders under subsites. Everything in a sub folder of a subsite is not viewable! I will still have to troubleshoot moving all those files out of the "photogallery" folder and into the root of the subsite. :/ Before importing them I always rename them in PaintShop Pro 8 so that the subject of the photo is the first word of the file name. That way all the photos for that particular set stay together alphabetically and I don't accidently overwrite existing files. :)
Just an f.y.i., the only things that I copy over using Win Explorer are jpegs (no image maps) so for that purpose there are no hyperlinks (at least not in mine!) The only problem I haven't conquered is the default compression setting - I don't want FP to compress any of my pics and sometimes I forget to click options to change it. I would like to know where that default setting is so I could change it.
Thanks so much for solving my problem! ~deb
