UNIX to Outlook

We are at the very beginning stage of a new project. We want to get our UNIX
(home grown app) based app to send appointments to the calendar via an html
pop-up. I know this can be done but not sure how.
Any help would be appreciated

Best method would be to generate an iCal/vCal file. I'm sure there are code samples for that in the UNIX world.
