Unknown application--cannot open WORD

I can't seem to opem my MS Word application. When I try to open it, I get a message it had performed an illegal operation and would shut
down.....due to unknown file. contact your vendor. I use Windoows 98. I have searched for help, and all I got was changing certain files from .new to.old. But in my case, it's an unknown file. Please help.
