unknown error (-3248) in Exchange Server Contacts or Check Names

In Office 2004 Entourage:

When I create a new message, and that I start to type the first letters
of
the name of a new contact and then I click on the button "verify the
names"
it gives me an error:

unknown error (-3248)

I have seen a bunch of posts, but no solutions!
The same users with the problem can see the information in the GAL on
OWA, so permissions seem OK, they also work with Office XP and Office
2003 on a PC. Only using Office 2004 on the Mac is there a problem.

And this is not all users on the Exchange Server. Only the oldest
users on the server seen to have the problem. Deleting and recreating
the Entourage account was no help. The settings are identical for the
users that work and fail. We are not using https: but http: since we
are on a private LAN and don't want to mess with certificates.

Any ideas? Global Address List is VERY important to out users
migrating to Mac!

OK, I solved it. Somehow, the LDAP default port was overridden and set
to zero (0)

To fix:

In Entourage
Go to Tools->Accounts
Click on the Exchange account in the list
Select Edit Account
Across the top of the new window are a bunch of selections, select
"Advanced"
There are 3 check boxes
Uncheck the "override default port" (which is checked and set at 0)
When unchecked, the proper LDAP port number will appear.

Apply the setting

Now it will all work. No more unknown error -3248

I have NO IDEA why the Entourage install sets the port to zero! It
happened on two of our Macs.

We had the Office 2004 trial installed originally, and then installed
the Volume Licensed Office 2004 version on top. Somehow the double
install must have set the default port to be overridden to zero (0)
which makes no sense. Which is why there would be a kernel-level
connection error!

So, now you have a fix. Seems to be related to installing one version
of Office 2004 on top of another.

I hope this helps someone. I saw LOTS of people who have this error,
and no solution. I found the first solution I know!
