Unknown error

Sameer

I have encountered an error which is troubling me for quite some time.

When the project manager approves the actuals submitted by the resources, an
error is genereted which can be seen below:

"Some approved task changes cannot be updated in project files. Click View
detail for more information"

Secondly while approving the task when project professional opens, it does
not open the actual project but instead opens a MSP0038.MTM file instead of a
..mpp file.

Would appreciate any type of help.
Thnx in advance.

Sameer,

Not that this is helpful, but we are experiencing the same issue. If you
can pass on anything you learn, it would be greatly appreciated. I'll do the
same.

We had a similar issue with a client when a project manager deleted a task
in a project but did not publish New and Changed Assignments, and then the
team member submitted actuals against the cancelled task. The result of
this was a corrupted project, given the fact that the team member was
submitting actual work on a task that no longer existed in the Microsoft
Project plan. To resolve this issue successfully, we had the client do the
following:

1. Save the enterprise project as an .mpp file using File - Save As - Save
As File
2. Delete the project from the Project Server database
3. Import the .mpp project back into the Project Server database using
Tools - Enterprise Options - Import Project to Enterprise

If you have Risks, Issues, or Documents associated with the project in
question, refer to the following FAQ for information how to preserve and
reuse the project's existing WSS subweb:

Hope this helps.

Dale,

It appears that we have 4 truly orphaned (not cancelled) task assignments in
the database. These tasks were deleted from a plan 'properly' (e.g.,
resource removed, rem. work set to 0, repub assignments) according to the PM,
however, they are still sitting in the DB as task assignments in the DB.
Strange thing is that they do not show up as cancelled assignments and they
are not in the currenly published plan either.

A resource logged time against these phantom tasks (in error - the resource
thought it was a different set of tasks) - hence the Unknown Error when the
PM tried to approve time for tasks no longer in his plan.

Any idea how these un-cancelled task assigmnents could have been orphaned?
I can manually mark them as cancelled and zero remaining work, but I'd like
to know how they got there and try and prevent more of these in the future.

I have no idea how the task assignments may have become orphaned in the
project. This usually happens when the PM deletes a task in the Microsoft
Project plan without removing the resource and then republishes the project.
I have no way to prove that in your situation, however. The best I can
recommend is that you follow the steps I detailed in the previous post to
resolve the Unknown Error issue. Hope this helps.

Is there anything that requires migration from the application server when
migrating from a development application server to a production application
server? I assume that any enterprise global templates and project plans will
require saving, correct? Is there any document or guide that outlines this
process or how to do the required steps?

Thanks
