Unknown keyboard shortcut to <Insert>

Mike Lyle

I use XP Home and Word 2002.

I am a clumsy typist, and quite often I find that some unknown, but
presumably only lightly touched, key combination appears to toggle
<Insert> on. I'm definitely not touching the <Insert> key.

It toggles off again, of course, on pressing the <Insert> key; but I'd
love to know what the mystery combination is so I can try harder to
avoid it. Can anybody tell me, please?

Don't be so sure you're not hitting Insert. On most keyboards it's all too
easy to hit by mistake for Backspace or Delete, especially if you're a
clumsy typist. <g>

(Do we top-post round here?)

I assure you I'm not hitting <Insert>: that's why I need to ask. If
anything, it seems to happen somewhere more to the left-hand side of the
kb.

If it only happens in Word then there could be another keyboard
shortcut assigned to Overtype. Go to Tools/Customize and click the
Keyboard command. In the Customize Keyboard dialog select "All
Commands" and in the list of Commands locate Overtype and see if a
shortcut other than Insert has been assigned.

assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Thanks, Beth. As I've had this system (Compaq) from new, I was pretty
sure no shortcut had been assigned; but I checked, and found indeed that
none had been. I think it's an "undocumented feature".
