"unknown user, uninstalled version"

Sorry if this has been answered before -- I haven't had
luck seraching this site.

Using WinXP, OfficeXP. No previous OS's or Office
installs on this system. When I installed, I got all
programs coming up with "unknown user, uninstalled
version" on the splash screen. They run, but some
functions don't work properly (like import filters).

Deleted Office XP and tried over -- twice. Now Word
comes up with a 'correct' splash screen (and on the
help/about screen) but the same problem exists with
Excel, Outlook, etc.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks.
