unlink calendar from estimated hours?

How does one unlink the calendar from estimated hours. I
am assigning task to be performed with a certain period
of realistic time which can be for a greater period of
time. A task is estimated to be accomplished within a 3
week period of time. when i put in a start date and
ending date of 40 hours and hit enter and then go back
and look at teh task the calendar dates have closed up to
just a period of 40 hrs. The person working the task has
other tasks on other projects to work on and is not
expected to work non-stop.

Hi Bill,

If I understand correctly, you would like to create a
task with 3 weeks duration(from start date of task to end
date of task), and assign a resource to the task with 40
hours of work.
Create the 3 week duration task. Do not enter start
dates or end dates for the task.
Split your screen (Window --> Split) to show the task
form at the bottom of the screen.
Change the task type to fixed duration in the task form
and click OK.
Select your resource's name from the drop down in the
task form and in the enter 40 hours of work.
Project will calculate the resource unit at 30%.
