Unload failure & Zone Alarm Mailsafe

I can only shut down Outlook by going to the task manager. Zone Alarm's junk
filter Mailsafe has become inoperative. This is a COM add-in.

Does anybody know of the correct procedure to unlink Outlook and Mailsafe?

I have tried turning of the COM add-in from Outlook, from Zone alarm and
from both together. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Zone
Alarm and Outlook. None of these have worked.

In Outlook, click Tools>Options>Other>Advanced Options>COM Add-Ins, select
the add-in and click Remove.

I have read that some COM add-ins are controlled by the installing program.
In this case, that is Zone Alarm. It appears that neither Zone Alrm nor
Outlook have any control over the mangled(?) stub of whatever is left of this
once operational add-in.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins (and the
same key under current users) and locate the addins - set the loadbehavior
to 1.

After removing the add-in from Outlook and closing Outlook, locate the file
on disk and rename it. This should prevent it from being reloaded.

Thanks, Diane. Whilst that got rid of the entry in the COM Add-Ins dialog
box, Outlook still won't exit correctly and I can't get re-establish the Zone
Alarm junk mail service.

After I changed both to the value 1, the Mailsafe addin was not visible in
the COM Add-Ins dialog box. However, Outlook still did not shut correctly and
I terminated it with Task Manager. I did try turning on Mailsafe from Zone
Alarm. The tool bar still did not show. When I looked at the COM Add-Ins
dialog, I could see the add in and it was not checked. I could check it but
if I close the dialog and reopen it, it remains unchecked.


I'd like to try and get Outlook back to where it was before Mailsafe was
installed for the first time. Will deleting the MlfOutlookAddin.MlfAddin
registry key have that effect?

Thanks, Brian. That certainly fixes the failure to close Outlook properly.
However, I was not able to reinstall the junk mail filter. Zone Alarm said
that there was an error connecting with 'the junk e-mail filter agent'. I
assume it was looking for the file under its original name.

Update. The shut down behaviour is not consistent. On some occasions it shuts
down properly, on others I have to use Taks Manager. I have not been able to
figure out what is causing the difference.

If MS Office decides that a component is causing problems, it is disabled.
The record of the disablement is kept in the registry and is retained even if
MS Office is completely uninstalled.

The component can be re-enabled by going to the 'Help' menu, choosing the
'About' item. There is a button 'Disabled Items' which opens a dialog box
that allows you to enable the item.

Probably not... you'll need to remove Mailsafe and the specific keys it
installed. Windows has a Run key that controls what loads - or use msconfig
(load it using start menu, run) to uncheck mailsafe then reboot.

Thanks Diane,

I can now say that the original problem was caused by a memory overload. I
did not see a warning message from Outlook that would have said that the
add-in was being disabled.

Since the record of the disablement is kept in the registry, it survives the
complete uninstallation of Outlook and Mailsafe. So Mailsafe still won't work
after both programs have been uninstalled and reinstalled.

The add-in can be re-enabled by going to the 'Help' menu, choosing the

that allows you to enable the item.

Your ideas helped give me the understanding that led to a solution of the
problem.
