unlock text selection or highlighting?

When in Office or Outlook, the document becomes automatically highlighted and
the highlighting or shading of selected text does not go away when clicking
or pressing escape key.

At a rough guess, I'd say your documents are Protected under Tools, Protect.
But please let us have some details>
