Unlocking document

For some reason, one of the documents I am trying to delete is
locked. I tried following the directionsthrough 'Help' but can not
unlock the item (the lock/unlock icon will not light up). Any
suggestions? It's driving me nuts.

What Mac OS and Word versions are you using?

Are you trying to delete the document throught the Finder, i.e Empty
Trash with the document in the Trash?

I had a similar problem in the past. 1) It was solved by looking at
the documents "Get Info" (file selected in Finder then command-i). In
the lower part of Get Info window in Tiger, Ownership & Permissions
are reported. Make sure you have write permission so you can change
document to unlock. 2) Sometimes just dragging the locked file to the
trash and holding down option key while you Empty Trash will work. 3)
Sometimes dragging the file to trash then restarting computer then
Empty Trash will work.
