Unnamed Header on WORD/Office 2008

I have transcribed Word documents emailed to me with person's name & date e.g. "Smith, John_022508", open & review, edit, print, & save.
In '08, I download the transcribed document & instead of the name/date (as above) appearing on the Header (above Word Toolbar),it says "Document 1 [Compatibility Mode]". Then I need to re-title each document when I save it.
It is a major nuisance.
I usually save these to desktop; going to "Save as" presents me with my entire desktop & a multitude of choices.
I used to just hit the "close" & it would ask me if I wanted to save changes. Now I have to replace name, re-select where, etc. etc.
Is there some easy way to avoid this hassle?

Thanks

If by "Header" you actually mean the document window's Title Bar (a Header
is an integral part of a document's content) it sounds like someone is
sending you *template* files rather than *document* files. Attempting to
open them is creating new documents based on the template - hence the
generic Document1 name in the Title bar. That's why you have to Save As -
the new document is actually being saved for the first time.

The term "Compatibility Mode" appears in the title bar because the templates
are in Word 2004 or earlier format - .doc for documents, .dot for templates.
Word 2007/8 use a new OOXML format - .docx for documents, .dotx for
templates [.dotm if the template contains VBA/customizations]. Any time you
open a file in the earlier format using Word 2007/8 that term will appear in
the title bar to serve as a reminder because that format doesn't support
some of the features available in the later versons.
