Messages are going into my unread mail folder but not into my inbox. What is
this and how can I fix this or eliminate my unread mail folder?

Unread Mail isn't a folder, but a Search Folder, which basically searches
your entire mailbox for all Unread messages.

Try this, go to the Unread Mail search folder and sort by Folder. That should
show you were the message supposedly is. If it's in your Inbox, swtich to
the Inbox and make sure that you don't have a filter applied.
