Unreadable Receipt of mac attachment by MS computer.

I'm new into Mac but when I purchased Microsoft Excel Mac I understood
that if I attach a file from Mac to an email sent to a MS computer,
the MS computer would be able to read it "seamlessly". I've just
heard that this isn't happening and attachments can't be opened. Can I
have advice please?

You heard correctly. The Mac (up through Office 200) and windows (up through
2003) files are in the same format. What email program did you use? Was the
file compressed? Provide some complete details on how you sent the file and
we can help.

FWIW, I develop excel applications on the Mac and send them to windows
clients from the Mac daily with no problems.

I was using "mail" version 9.1 in Mac.
Recipients were using Windows XP. They advised that they received 2
files (I only sent 1 Excel for Mac attachment on a normal basis, not
zipped and the "send windows friendly attachments" box was was ticked)
They were shown as a ".DAT" file and a ".HTM" file. The HTM merely
pulled my message up on an alternative window. The .Dat file was not
recognised by the PC.

A couple of suggestions -

1- Use the checkbox in Save As to use filename extensions, and

2- Always zip/stuff files before emailing to *anyone* - especially if the
attachment is going to a Windows user in an Exchange Server environment.

I'm not sure what is happening here. I never use mail, but as a consequence
of this thread, I used mail to send myself an excel workbook, both to my Mac
account and an account I have on windows. The file arrived fine as a single
attachment perfectly readable in either location. I did not have "windows
friendly attachments" checked.
