Unrecognized database format

Chuck Fraser

When I, my client, try to open this access database they
get the error message from the paperclip:

Unrecognized database format

And the database won't open. Acess starts with no database
window and that's it!

Anyone have any ideas on how the resolve this? The compact
utility also doesn't work on the database. I get the same
error message.

This error has two possible causes:

- You're trying to open it in an older version of the program, for
instance the database is in A2002 format and you're trying to open it
in A2000. This can happen if a user opens it in the newer version and
accepts the program's offer to upgrade; it will become unreadable to
any older version.

- The database is corrupt.

If it's the latter, see Tony Toews' website
http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/corruptmdbs.htm for some possible
reasons and solutions.

I hope you have a working backup... you may need it. :-{(
