Unrecoverable disk error

I keep getting an error every couple of days:
"There is an unrecoverable disk error on file ...
The disk you're working on has a media problem that prevents Word from using
it.
Try the following:
*Try formatting another disk
*Save the document to another disk"

Then it tries to close Word, but says
"You cannot close Microsoft Office Word because a dialog box is open"
(presumably the software equivalent of a sign saying "do not throw stones at
this sign")

The PC is a tablet, running Windows XP.
I am saving locally to the hard disk. The PC only has one disk. Norton
Utilities Disk Doctor says there is nothing wrong with it.
I have not had any problems in any application other than Word.

Any ideas what could be causing this and how I can prevent it in future?

Thanks
Roger

Disable the Office Plug-in option in Norton Anti Virus.

Dear Terry,
Thanks for the response, but it is already disabled.
By this I mean: under Options for Anti Virus, Miscellaneous, the option
"Enable Office Plugin" does not have a tick.

If there is some other disabling mechanism, please let me know.

Thanks
Roger

that's the correct option to disable and it usually clears the problem. When
you get this occur again, try using Alt+Tab to see if you can find an open
dialog listed (which may be off screen). Also, doing a Ctrl+Alt+Del and
checking Task Manager to see if there is anything to give a clue about what
might be causing this.
