unstable linked graphics (.wmf) --causes???

When I link .wmf files into my word documents, I sometimes
find that the graphics are unstable--at some indefinite
time, the graphic will lose any cropping and resizing I
have done, and it will lose the original proportions. I
always set the lock feature, so it isn't that. Oddly
enough, the figure doesn't revert to the original if I
click on the "reset" button, it stays distorted. The same
is true if I try to update the links.

Is it possible that there is a problem with some kind of
setting in the program that makes the .wmf? These .wmf s
are typically exported from solidworks or autocad.

Have you considered importing the files instead of linking
to them? They can be edited in word.

Yes, I've considered it, but (1) the docs tend to be
sizable (chapters of manuals) with numerous
figures/illustrations and (2) co. policy is to link to
avoid size issues.

BTW: this is word 2000

I wondered if the problem might be multiple links to a
graphic, so I made individual copies for each figure.
Didn't help. Irritating thing is that it just occurs for
some of them (it would be worse if it were all, but at
least then that would mean the program is broken).

Only suggestion I've seen so far is something about .emf
files changing size with the display, but I'm
using .wmf ...?

If your company is open to it, you might take a look at FrameMaker. It loves
linked graphics.
