unsuccessful creating new heading style

Hi,
I could create a heading of the form

Appendix 1 Something

by using heading 1 as a template. Now I want to create a
style for the next level, i. e.

Appendix 1.1 something else
Appendix 1.2 something other

and the numbering just does not work. I get something like

Appendix 5 Bla

Appendix 1.1 mumble
Appendix 1.2 other

when it should of course be Appendix 5.1 and Appendix 5.2.
I used heading 2 as a template in this case.

Any ideas?
