Unsuccessful install of O2000Sp3 on Win98SE

I have Win98SE, fully patched.
Office 2000 Premium installed
Office 2000 Sr1 installed
Plus any other patches available before that.
I can successfully download the Office 2000 Sp3 and it starts to download.
I don't get a premature stop to installation.
However after inserting the CD when it asks, (just after 50% installation),
there is much whirring of the CD, flashing of the hard drive and nothing
happens for several minutes. Then the rest of the installation bar finishes
very quickly and I get a message "Unsuccessful installation".
I've had a look around the MS Office site - I found that if certain Access
files were present on the hard drive, they had to be renamed. So I did that.
No luck. I found that corrupt or missing registry keys could be the problem.
I checked that out & found that I was missing a registry key so I created a
new one as per instructions. No luck. However then I found that this solution
was for Office 2003 Sp1 - probably still applies to other versions too, but
this fix was to do with helping the program locate the path to the CD ROM.
After inserting the CD Rom I didn't get a message that it couldn't be found,
and it was definitely being read, so I don't think that was the problem
either. Maybe the CD has become corrupt? However maybe I do have some corrupt
or missing registry keys. How can I find out if my registry is correct for
Office?
Should I try a repair of Office using the CD? Or will this overwrite my SR1
update?
I do use Registry cleaner software & at times I do delete components that I
no longer use - so maybe something got thrown out along the way??
I'm also wondering since I have made several attempts to install the update
if I in fact need to delete any temp files left by previous attempts?
This computer + Cd was passed on to me & I also wonder if it is a valid disk
- I had no trouble installing the original software or the SR1 download from
the site - but does SP3 require a valid registration key?

Here are a few suggestions, try one of the following, in this order:

1. You can repair your installation using your original CD, the SR1 update
won't be removed.

2. Try downloading the fullfile version of SP3 and installing. You can get
it from the MS Download Center:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en

3. Try this update for Office 2000 SR1 that helps with requiring the CD:
Description of the Office 2000 Update: February 10, 2004
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;835220
and then try downloading SP3 again

Hope this helps

I didn't try (1) as the office program otherwise seems to work ok, and it
seems to be just a problem with accessing the CD.

I tried (2) installing the full file - more than once - but the same thing
happened - it asked me for the CD and then the CD doesn't work.

I downloaded the file mentioned in (3) - this downloaded and installed
successfully according to the notices. This installation also asked me for
the CD but in this instance it did whatever it had to and installed - however
this is meant to be a file you install to get over the need for having the CD
and the first thing it does is ask you for the CD !! ???

So next step is to try the full install again....

When I downloaded the "full version" and unzipped it, there were 4 files:
ARTSP3ff, MAINSP3ff, SP3CD2ff and outlctlx. In what order do I apply these?

I guessed that MAINSP3ff might be the first file - (that's what I had tried
first previously when trying the full file install) - had a go at starting
with this file but it also asked for the CD. (This was prior to the download
mentioned above however, maybe now it won't ask for the CD). It also came up
as an installation screen for installing SR1 - which I already have - I
thought I was supposed to be installing the SP3 patch!!

So...in what order do I now apply these full file patches please?
Thanks!
