unusual hyperlink problem in Word

no one

i've been using Office 2k, on a Win 2k box, for a few years. up until
two days ago, hyperlinks in a Word document always appeared 'clear' --
no backround color -- as long as the cursor was not moved over the text
and the text was not selected with the mouse. if i moved the cursor
over the link, or selected it with the mouse, the link background would
change to gray. it would revert to clear once i moved the cursor or the
focus moved to the link target.

today, for some mysterious reason, all hyperlinks (bookmarks, cross
reference, captions, anything that is a link) has a gray background,
whether the cursor or mouse is moved over the link or not. the links
still work, the appearance is wrong. so far i don't find a way to
restore the original behavior. can anyone suggest a solution?

If you right click on one of the links and select Format->Hyperlink, does
anything unusual show in the dialogs?

Hi No One,

In Word in Tools=>Options=>View check the setting for
'Field Shading'
