Unwanted automatic headlining

S

Steve Weiner

My "normal" style in Word XP has developed a formatting
glitch that I am unable to stop.

When I type an introductory line, say one that includes
just a name or a topic, then hit "enter" twice, the
typeface automatically flips from my regular body type,
Times New Roman regular 12 point, into some kind of
larger, headline face, usually Arial 18 point bold.

I see nothing in the "normal" style definitions that
explains why this happens. I've actually removed the
default normal and created a new one. The same thing
happens every time.

How can I get this automatic headlining to stop?

Thanks for anyone's help.

Of course that was it. Thanks for helping me.

Hi Steve

Tools > AutoCorrect Options. Click the "AutoFormat As
You Type" tab. Un-tick everything on that dialog box
unless you're sure you
really need it. In particular, un-tick everything
under "Apply as you type" and "Automatically as you type"
(though you might tick
"Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces".)

The one that's giving you today's headache is "Define
styles based on your formatting". It doesn't, of course,
define styles based
on your formatting. It adds direct formatting to your text, as you've discovered.

Hope this helps.
