Unwanted Automatic Style Changes

While this has long been a problem with Word, my current version is
2004 for Mac. Sometimes when I use the format painter or style
pull-down menu, Word will suddenly change the style's indentation and
tabs. That is, Word automatically makes an unrequested style edit.
The "Automatically Update" box it NOT checked.

I have to edit the style to correct the indentation and tabs but they
just become corrupted again next time I apply the style.

How do I prevent Word from making random changes to styles?

Haven't a clue....

Is it always the same style?

Under Tools | AutoCorrect, AutoFormat As You Type, there's a "define styles
based on your formatting" checkbox. Is that checked?

I unchecked the "define styles based on your formatting" box but the
behavior persisted. This error appears to occur with styles that
specify automatic line numbering or bulleted lists.

John,

Can I assume that the location of the "List Template" for the
default bullet and numbering styles is embedded in the default
Normal template?
