Unwanted Autonumbering happening in New Style

I am trying to use Styles to format my table entries, i.e., all text looks
one way, all number entries, another etc. I have done this before.

I set up a new style: called Table Header 1, to be Arial, 10 pt, bold,
centered.

When I highlight a cell or row and then select this style, Word changes the
entry to that style BUT also inserts a field and auto-numbers it (starting
with a 2). For example if I select a row to apply the style and there are 5
cells, it autonumbers them 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

I have checked that None is chosen for each of the Bullet & Numbering
options, and that the quick button Numbering has not been selected.

This is a pretty simple style and I have no idea why this is happening.
Using Word 2003 on a stand alone XP PC.

Any ideas on what is happening/how to fix it much appreciated (=

Display the Modify Style dialog box for the style in question, and then
click Format, Numbering. Click the "None" option, and then click OK to
confirm the settings. Does this help?

Unfortunately, it does not solve it. None is selected for all four options
(i.e., Bulleted, Numbered, Outline #'d and List Styles).

When I just tried it again, I noticed that AFTER I apply the style to the
text in the table, the "quick numbering button" (the one on the formatting
toolbar usually found at the top, right under File, Edit, View, etc.) is
highlighted.

Is there a way to disable the quick number button from kicking in after I
apply the style, or is there a way to prevent it from being linked to the
table?

If the issue is within tables, only, something could have happened to the
table style. Copying the document contents, except for the final paragraph
mark (Ctrl+A, Shift+Left arrow, Ctrl+C) and pasting (Ctrl+V) into a new
document. Does that make a difference?

Thx again for the reply.

I tried that and it made no difference - still getting the auto-numbering.

FYI, the document I'm having problems with was sent to me from someone else,
so I thought maybe something was wrong with their template. (I created the
style I'm trying to apply.) So using your logic, I also tried to start a new
document by opening my template and pasting everything but final paragraph
mark into it. It did not make a difference even when I tried to apply another
style to that row in the table - it auto-numbered. It auto-numbers no matter
what style I try to apply.

Any other ideas on a possible solution? The document is 96 pages of text &
tables so not easily reproduced. Thx for any consideration.

It seems as if the number formatting is tied to the *table* style, then,
which suggests that the table style is damaged (normally, it shouldn't
store numbering formatting at all).

If you are using a built-in table style, you can copy a fresh version from
another document or template, via the Organizer. To access the Organizer,
click Tools | Template and Add-Ins. Click the Organizer button.

If you are using a custom table style, you can do pretty much the same
thing. Create a fresh version in a different document or template, and then
copy it over.

Thx a mint for your tenacity Stefan.

Since you mentioned the table style is likely damaged, and yesterday Word
was freezing on me frequently, I re-installed Word. Word is no longer
crashing and the tables have lost their autonumbering - whew! I have never
re-installed a program before so never thought to do it early. Thx again for
your help.

I'm glad you got it sorted.

I have to admit I never would have guessed that this was an application
problem! Note, however, that you can usually fix such problems by
*repairing* the installation. As a matter of fact, most people find that
reinstalling doesn't help at all.
