Unwanted black borders and fills when inserting grouped jpegs

I used to use word 97 on a win 95 machine with no
problems. I'd lay out collages of jpegs in powerpoint,
select all and group them, and then paste special them
into word, with float over text unchecked. The options
are no longer avilable in word 2000 on a win 2000
machine. I attempt to paste special as jpeg, and select
format picture layout inline with text. A black border
crops up around the grouped collage, and in any 'white'
space between jpegs.

File sizes are much smaller, but I'd like to avoid this
black border and fill. Anyone have any thoughts?
