Unwanted Format changes

In a document, when I change the format, eg. add bullets or indent a
sentence, the entire document changes its format. I have to hit the undo key
to put the format back in place and have the change to the change I made take
hold. I've tried turning off autoformat but that doesn't work. Is there a
way to stop this from happening. I don't remember this happening in earlier
Word versions.
