unwanted formula in cell instead of calc

I have numerous formulas in the cells of my spreadsheet that return
correct results. Suddenly some of the cells I am entering formulas into
display the formula instead of the result and I can't get rid of it. I
have tried toggling Ctrl+~. The formulas appear identical to adjacent
ones that work fine. I have tried pasting the format from working cells
into the malfunctioning cells. No help. Any idea what's going on?
