Unwanted items appearing in TOC of large word 2007 doc

Hiya,
I'm new, be nice!

I am compiling a large word doc (PhD, 80 000 wds, with diagrams/figures etc)
and some items keep appearing in the TOC that aren't supposed to be there.
The whole document is using a style template, and all headings/tables and
figures are correctly used/bookmarked. Sections are all working fine too.

It looks like some things are gaining a bookmark magically, I've tried
deleting them but don't really know much about that, and can't make it work.

They are either 'normal', or 'strong' bits of text, strong just means normal
plus bold. But also some figures and table captions too (.....now all are
doing it). If I delete the text and start again then it looks fixed, but re-
appears the next time I open it. I didn't copy in some of this, as in, the
whole title page is coming up in the TOC, but I created it from scratch.

I've read this thread,
http://www.mackb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/word/8587/Table-of-Contents-Problem -
very helpful! But no good for me I'm afraid.
My coding is appearing as - {TOC \O "1-3" \H \Z \U }
Which all seems good from what I've read. When I reveal the codes on a
specific part of the TOC, it says, {HYPERLINK \L "_TOC211694" } etc with the
bookmark number.

Hope that's enough info.

The TOC generator collects paragraphs with an "Outline Level" and copies
them into the TOC.

In your case, it is interested in only levels 1 to 3.

That would normally mean text formatted with Headings 1, 2, and 3. But
other paragraphs can have that formatting too.

If you Control + Click on the page number of a bad entry in the TOC, Word
will skip to the source of the bother.

Then right-click and choose "Paragraph". Look to see what the "Outline
Level" is set to. If it's anything other than "Body Text" then that
paragraph is being considered for inclusion in the TOC. Change to Body Text
the outline level of any paragraph you don't want in the TOC.

BTW: You posted in the Mac Word group. If I had not been wrestling with
the very horrid Word 2007 all day, I would probably not have taken pity on
you :)

Hope this helps

Oh wow, you are a genius! I did realise my major faux pas after posting...
but then thought yours was the most detailed and knowledgeable post in all my
searches for help.......... lucky for me you forgave my PC-ness!!!!

It has worked, when doing that in the styles didn't (go figure, if I use
styles to select all the instances, then change manually, it does, just not
in the style itself?!?!). The Document map showed me where things were coming
from too, just didn't know what to do about it.

You've saved myself, and all my thesis-writing friends, many many hours of
hair loss! I promise to upgrade to the world of the Mac as soon as possible ;)

Hahaha, Thanks Clive :) I'll know where to go next time, great set of links!
I also have a friend doing his thesis on a Mac, so I'll know where to send
him....... but he'll probably just pay someone!

John, and a few others here, work in both Mac and Windows versions. However,
if you have problems in future, it's likely that more people in a PC group
will have experienced your specific problem. Here's where all the groups are
