unwanted lines

Unwanted lines appear to the left of certain random
paragraphs in my Word document. How did they get there and
how can I get rid of them?

It sounds like Track Changes may be turned on. Check
your status bar at the bottom of the screen. If TRK is
dark, double-click it to turn it off.
