unwanted page break

I'm finishing up a book on my Mac, in Word 11.5.0 (080429), and I'm
trying to get rid of a page break that I don't want. In Page Layout
view, the text goes 2/3 of the way down the page, then a gap in the
type appears and the text resumes on the next page. I go to the next
page, backspace, and the text does not fill in the blank space. The
text disappears. I go to Normal layout, and the dotted line stretches
across the page, indicating it's a normal page break. I select it and
backspace the text. The page break disappears. I reposition the text,
and the page break appears again. I return to Page Layout, and the
space of about 20 lines is there again. In other words, I have no idea
how to get rid of this unwanted page break. Any suggestions?

Hi Tom -

My first guess would be that the paragraph following the page break has been
formatted with the Page Break Before attribute, either directly or by way of
a style.

Second guess would be that a Next Page Section Break has been used.

Unfortunately can't tell any better than you unless you turn on the
non-printing characters (¶) - they're specifically there to help clarify
situations such as this. If you're not familiar with them you might do well
to review this article:
