Unwanted Pages

Hello

I fixed my numbering heading problem by following Shauna Kellys
excellent guide at her website.
All the formatting changes I made were related to heading styles.

However, I now have a number of unwanted page breaks scattered
throughout the document. I don't know why they're where they are or how
to get rid of them.

Appreciate any ideas

Unexpected (premature) page breaks can be caused by:

1. Manual page breaks. You can see these in normal view as

............................Page Break...........................

Just select the break and press Delete.

2. Paragraphs formatted as "Page break before" (Line and Page Breaks tab of
Format Paragraph).

3. Paragraphs formatted as "Keep with next" and/or "Keep lines together"
(same place).

Thank you for the response;

I got rid of the unwanted page breaks (and the page numbers that came
along with it). I have to confess though that I'm not sure what I did to
fix this because none of the suggestions below worked. All of the
unwanted page breaks came after some of the headings, and I was playing
around with formatting them.

However, I have another problem. I cannot insert page numbers.
Whenever I do an insert page numbers, my applications goes crazy with
many layers of text material superimposing on one another. When I click
normal view I get to to see my document clearly again, but there are no
page numbers.

Word shows page 1/1 at the bottom no matter where I am in the 50 page
document. What am I doing wrong. Thanks again for any suggestions.

If Word is showing just one page, then the likelihood is that you've somehow
managed to get your text into a text box or floating table (which can't
exceed one page). If you see Table Properties on the shortcut menu when you
right-click, you're in a table. Open the dialog and , on the Table tab, set
the wrapping to None. If you see Format Text Box, then you're in a text box.
Open the dialog, go to the Text Box tab, and choose Convert to Frame. Ignore
all warnings. Right-click again, choose Format Frame, and click the Remove
Frame button in the dialog (you can probably also remove it by pressing
Ctrl+Q, which you'll need to do, anyway, to get rid of the border Word will
have applied).

Another cause of this problem is having multiple columns, the left one being
margin width. Go to Format | Columns and make sure the number of columns is
set to 1; change it if it's anything else.

Thank you kindly for your support.
Under Normal View, I could not see any Table Properties or Format Text
Box , on right-clicking, as you suggested.

However, under Print View, I see all 50 pages squooshed up onto one
page (what a frightening sight). When I right click I see Format Frame,
and when I click Remove Frame I begin to see some pages being created.
For example, instead of 1/1 I see 1/5. Since there is more squooshed up
pages, I continue repeating the above process until I recover all of my
pages.

The problem is this process also removes the frame around paragraphs and
headings- so document is still messed up. I still have my original "one
page" document.

Is there any other way of doing this?? Really appreciate any ideas.
Thanks, K

It sounds as if the document may have been created by OCR? It is typical for
such apps to place elements in frames, and in your case they seem to have
all piled on top of each other. You can restore any frames you actually
need, but I suspect what you actually want around your paragraphs is just a
border (Format | Borders and Shading).
