unwanted paragraph borders

I'm using a bottom border as a full-width underline for 5 section headings in
a document (a resume), as an ordinary underline crosses dropped capitals & so
looks bad. This works fine until I print, then the "paragraph" immediately
following such a heading also prints with such a bottom border, except it's
thinner & inconsistently applied. These also don't show in either Print
Layout or Print Preview, although they sometimes show in Layout at very
specific zooms (114% & 147%). This originally occured for all 5 instances,
but by copying & editing a correctly printing heading I've managed to "fix"
this for some but not for all 5 instances simultaneously, & not consistently
the same ones. The identified "style" is same for all 5 headings, & the
"style" for the following "paragraph" in each case where it prints with the
unwanted border doesn't specify any border format at all. It's driving me
nuts, & preventing me from getting a job! (Proficiency with Word is among the
requirements for the type of work I do.) Using Word 2002, but have printed
from Word 97 & 2003 with same results except for the inconsistent application
mentioned above. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Well, this seems odd. What happens if you place the insertion point in a
paragraph that have the undesired border and then press Ctrl+Q (which removes
direct formatting)?

Thank you for your response, Stefan. The Ctrl+Q approach had already been
attempted in that I had already tried deleting all formatting & starting over
from just plain text in a new document. The link to the page re corrupted
documents & templates also failed to provide a direct solution, but hints in
it about where hidden auto-formatting instructions are stored led me back to
looking at that aspect again, & so to what appears to be at least a
work-around if not yet full comprehension. Replacing the problem
"paragraphs" with identically formatted ones from elsewhere in the document
(then editing the text back to what it originally read) appears to have
resolved the problem of the unwanted underlining in the print version, but
only after I had turned off "Other paragraph styles" on the "Auto Format" tab
in the "Auto Correct Options" page & understood that I had to include the
"new paragraph - carriage return" formatting symbol from the end of the
previous "paragraph" in the text selections for this. So at least the
document now prints correctly, & I have a slightly better understanding of
Word's auto formatting feature.
Thanks again for your response. Just knowing someone was willing to affer
assistance was very encouraging.

Thank you for the feedback.

The fact that replacing the paragraphs worked suggests that there was some
sort of weird corruption, after all. Obviously, it is difficult to tell from
a distance.
