unwanted shading of pagenumber

since last week all new and old Word docs appear to have
shading of the pagenumbers. I didn't change anything and I
am also not able to change this 'lay-out'. all the other
foottext appears normally on my screen. When I print these
docs, the page number will appear normally, without
shading! The problem is that word sometimes stucks when I
insert pagenumbering. I already uninstalled and
reinstalled word. In Word 97 I don't have this problem,
only in Word 2000. Does anybody know what the problem
might be?

Hi Kamiel,

It's an optional setting:
Tools > Options > View > Field shading: Always

Change it to "When selected" or "Never".
