I certainly have an idea, but whether it makes sense or not is another
matter
Could it be that you are typing in a double-byte character set font, and
Word is allowing twice the horizontal space, in case the character you type
turns out to be a double-width character?
If it's not that, I suspect that it is just a rotten font (the screen
hinting is way off...)
But I am really guessing here...
