Unwanted Spam in Guest Log

Rocky

I added a guest log to my site. Now I am getting spam entries. How can I stop
it. I have been adding IP deny every day but need IP addresses appear every
day.

You can get a temporary respite by renaming the guestbook with a name
not associated with feedback, guestbooks, guests or books. This will
deter automated postings for a while, but nothing will be permanent,
and it will not stop manual postings.

In my opinion, blocking IP addresses is a waste of effort. You would
have to block entire ranges of IPs to block any single one, since most
users use DHCP, or if the offending user is running through a proxy
server, blocking the proxy will not block the user (who will change
servers) but will block all other innocent users of that proxy.
(There are millions of AOL users who access the internet through a
relatively small number of proxy servers.)

Rocky-
The sources of where people keep the guestbook are
getting smarter and smarter. The only way to stop getting
the spam is to stop having a guestbook.

At the beginning of this year I would only get a bad
message here and there. Not it seems to go in waves, almost
like a search engine updates the list of guestbooks and then
a slew of spam comes out. Uop until yesterday, I only had 1
spam message for the month. I have received 12 in the last
day, and the IP addresses are all over the place, and the
source computers are spread across the globe. I changed my
entire web structure a few months ago, changed the urls for
the pages, changed page types etc. They have come back
obviously.

When I did the big change, I switched from the fp style
guestbook to a custom scripted application. The GB entries
now go into an html email sent to me, duplicating the form
used. I can edit or whatever going in, but 99% of the time
I just place the email into the GB denied email folder.

THANKS to all of you that have responded. I appreciate the input. I either
have or will try all the suggestions. My list of blocked IP addresses is
growing. I am concerned that I will block people unnecessarily.

If someone comes up with a great idea let me know. I suspect the way to stop
it is to force people to enter a randomly generated code before they can add
to the guest book. (Like you see on some sites) I just don't know how to do
that. Again THANKS -
