Unwanted Special Characters in Office

J

Jason

Hi there,

I have an issue with Office in that it is insisting that whenever I press '
(apostrophe), " (quotes) or ` (accent) etc, it assumes I am holding down
control and waits for me to press the next letter. It then displays a
special character, eg: if i press 'a I get the accented a. I then have to
hit backspace twice and then enter ' ' [Backspace] to get a single '. While
this is mildly irritating in Word documents, it becomes an absolute
nightmare when using VBA. Trying to do complex string concatenation is very
painful.

I have eliminated keyboard (this happens on my wifes logon, but not mine.
Using MS digital media pro).

I have checked through language settings and autocorrect; no joy.

Any suggestions appreciated.

MS Word 2003; Vista Hm Premium.

Cheers, Jason.

This *is* a keyboard issue. You have somehow enabled a European keyboard
layout, in which these keys do function as dead keys. Go to Control Panel |
Regional Options | Input Locales (or whatever the equivalent is in Vista)
and make sure that they keyboard is set to English (US) or English (UK).

Excellent. I wouldn't have thought that "US International" would have been
incorrect, but hey - you learn something every day...
Change it to "US" and all is fine... strange nomenclature, though.

Cheers.

"International" didn't give you a clue? <g> I guess this keyboard layout is
designed to make it easier for U.S. typists to produce documents in French
or Spanish.
