Unwanted toolbar when opening file

The Office installed on my computer is in my national language - a bit
clumsy, but that's the way my employer wants it - so some of the terms in the
following are my own translation as I do not always remember the original
english terms. Therefore there might be errors, but I hope you can follow me.

I have a Word document acting as a template contaning some control elements
(check boxes - no macro assigned). Every time I open the template it is 1) in
the design mode and 2) the Control Element Tool Box is active together with
3) a third small tool box which contains only the design mode on/off toggle.
All three items are quite annoying, but I can't get rid of them. I have of
course tried to switch design mode OFF, close the two extra tool boxes and
save the document, but every time I open it again they are back. It is a
nuisance in all the documents created from that template.
How can I solve this?

The changes need to be made in the *template*, itself, if you have access to
it. Open the .dot file, turn off Design Mode as well as the unwanted
toolbars, then Save & Close.

I am not sure what a .dot file is, but I have one c:\documents and
settings\nsv\application data\templates\norm.dot which is created when
installing the Office software. This .dot file is not in design mode, and it
does not affect my template.

By the way, there is not much template about the file; it is only a word
document containing an empty table with some headlines into which I can fill
relevant data. But I did not create it, so I do not know if there is some
kind of hidden instructions somewhere. There are no macros.

I could of course recreate it starting from scratch with copy/paste
technique, but that would be the clumsiest way of them all to solve this.

First - it wasn't obvious from your initial post but you are evidently using
a PC & Word for Windows - this is the Mac Word newsgroup. For future
reference you should address any inquiries to the appropriate group in order
to get fastest & most accurate resolution to the issue.

Second - .dot is the extension for a Word _document template file_, as
opposed to .doc which is a regular Word document. The file Normal.dot is the
template on which standard new documents are based. IOW, when you click the
New Document button Word reads the specs from Normal.dot & generates the new
doc on screen based on those specs (paper size, margins, default font, as
well as a host of others). The same principle applies to any template - when
you create a new document based on it (rather than Normal) the new .doc is
generated based on that template file (.dot) - you are *not* opening the
template (.dot) file itself... or at least that _should_ be what happens.

Third - It doesn't matter what the complexity of the template in question
is, *it* is the source of the problem. If you don't have access to the
template (.dot) get in touch with whoever does - probably the person that
created it - they didn't finish their job. They need to open the template,
turn off design mode, close the various toolbars and Save the changes. As
long as the template file has all those elements active, any new document
based on it will present the same way.

I did not know that this is an exclusive Mac Word newsgroup, but of course I
will much prefer to put my question in the right forum if i can only find
one.
Anyone has a hint?

Hello again -

Note that I didn't say this group is "exclusively" for Mac Word - just that
you'd often get faster response on many PC Word issues in one of those
groups. You can pursue them further from:

Many aspects of Word are the same or very similar on both Mac & PC, so some
who frequent this group work "both sides of the aisle" & will be happy to
help out if they can regardless of the user's version. It's just that
knowing right off which version that is can sometimes make a difference.
