unwanted white space above and below

I've created a 4.5 x 18.5 cm bookmark with variegated colour that looks fine
on screen but prints with a white strip across the top and bottom. I'm using
Vista and Word 2007 and I made my page the size of the bookmark in page
setup. Please, how do I get rid of the white strips?

P.S. I also tried doing the bookmark in a textbox on a normal blank page but
couldn't get a coloured background. Colour fill behind selected paras didn't
fill the entire box, nor could I get variegated fill effects as with the
former method.

Perhaps you have exceeded the printable area of your printer? (Though I
would not expect that at that size unless you're using paper smaller than
A4.

No, the bookmark is a lot smaller than the printable area of my printer and I
did printing trial on standard size page.

The white strip is your printer's unprintable area, which it requires for paper
handling.

If you have a "photo printer" that is capable of printing all the way to the
edge, you can try using that -- you'll have to check the printer's documentation
for how to set the option.

Otherwise, your alternative is to trim off the borders after printing.

I think the clue (which I missed before) is your saying, "I made my page the
size of the bookmark in page setup." So the unprintable area *is* the issue.
If you set up the bookmark on a larger sheet of paper instead, you won't
experience this issue.
