How far in advance is it possible to have upcomming appiontments showing in
your to do bar, also is it possible for the to do bar to update appointments
as they become due (not just the normal reminder)

The To-do is limited to 30 days ahead. Not sure how you want it to update
them as they come due, but it only shows what is in the appointment - so
you'd need to update the appointment.

Thank you for your prompt response.
It's a shame that 30 days is the maximum as it makes an ideal method for a
quick glance saving the need to keep changing views.

Because there is a limit to the number that you can see in the to-do and
most people have more than that number in a week, it would be less than
useful for a large number of users. They'd need a large monitor and very
high resolution - and remove tasks and the navigation calendars. (I can see
about 20 appointments ahead max. its well under 30 days.)
