Update a few fields in Sharepoint List. Not overwriting the entire form

Hi,

I am having a problem with this scenario.
I have a sharepoint library and an associated infopath form.

The initiator of a form can create a new form and post it to the
library.
Other visitors can view the form in a different view and get to edit
only 1 column that is a ratings column.

As of now, everytime a vistor updates the ratings column, the entire
form is resubmitted to the library and the old form is overwritten .
Is it possible not to have the whole form over written but only the
update made to the ratings field.?

The reason, i need to get this working is that because the whole form
is overwritten i cannot get content approval, as everytime the form is
rated the content approval kicks in...

How do i manage this scenario.
